Syrians are suffering from debilitating injuries due to the war. Help provide physical and mental rehabilitation so they can function and become independent.
Imagine being a young child living in the middle of a war zone. Suddenly your home is bombed and your whole world changes. In an instant you lose one or both of your legs and along with that any sense of independence. You can no longer do even the simplest of tasks. Even going to the park will break your heart as you see children your age playing and having fun as you are confined to a wheelchair.
Except, this is not a fictional story, this is the real-life story of Omar Alshahaby. And while the ending could have been heartbreaking, instead it is a story of hope…
Omar came to UOSSM Turkey’s Physical Rehabilitation Center in Gaziantep in Turkey feeling hopeless. He thought he would never be able to have fun again. He lost both legs from that bombing that targeted innocent civilians in residential areas. He was only nine years old, and he felt his life was over.
After evaluation, the rehabilitation team decided on a treatment plan to strengthen his legs and get them ready for prosthetic limbs and improve his overall well-being. Omar worked very hard. It was a long and tiring road. But due to his perseverance and the dedication of the rehabilitation team, Omar was able to walk again on his new legs. He was able to smile again…laugh… run and play with his friends. This was a real-life happy ending.

We have encountered countless stories like Omar’s. UOSSM Turkey’s Rehabilitation Centers in Turkey provide physical and mental rehabilitation to Syrian refugees with the comfort of speaking their own language. There are countless cases of patients, who were wounded and negatively affected by bombings, suffered loss of limbs, damage to their brains, and other serious injuries. These injuries can be debilitating and restrict their lives causing them to be completely dependent on others. Many other patients have debilitating diseases that require integrated physical and mental rehabilitation to help them cope and handle their disease, which will ultimately enable them to gain back their strength, regain their confidence and functionality, and enable them to become independent and positive contributors to society.
Syrian refugees rely heavily on UOSSM Turkey’s Rehabilitation Centers in Turkey. Since 2012, UOSSM Turkey has provided vital services to tens of thousands of patients. Please help us keep these centers running. We would like to continue with these programs and other initiatives to be able to support those in need this Ramadan.
