October 2018 Activities and Updates from UOSSM USA
We hope this newsletter finds you in the best of health. We would like to welcome all of our new subscribers and supporters to the UOSSM family. You will receive plenty of new information and updates about our work and activities for this and every month. UOSSM’s 2000+ dedicated staff members in the US and abroad are working hard to make a difference in the lives of Syrians inside Syria and in neighboring countries, and to provide the medical support that is so desperately needed. UOSSM held the the Annual General Assembly Meeting in Istanbul on October 28-29. Topics covered included strategic planning for 2019, and elections for the new board . Dr. Hussam Al-Fakir from UOSSM Canada was elected as the new president for UOSSM. UOSSM USA board members, Dr. Monzer Yazji, and Dr. Khaula Sawah, attended the meetings. A representative from the Turkish Ministry of Health visited as well.
UOSSM celebrated the fifth anniversary of the UOSSM Mental Health Care Center in Reyhanli, Turkey. The center has provided services to over 15,000 people since it was established in 2013. The center provides mental health care services to Syrian refugees.
UOSSM Protection Teams held a fun program for handicapped children on World Polio Day. Many of the children are internally displaced. There were several fun games and activities offered in the Child Friendly Spaces Center, and the room was filled with happy faces! ♥️💜🌈
UOSSM participated in Breast Cancer Awareness month throughout the month of October. UOSSM provided beneficial information and advice about the illness, causes, the importance of breast exams and early detection, which is key in saving life.
UOSSM board and staff, along with members of health directorates, attended a workshop/meeting in Gaziantep. A governance workshop was offered and updates about the general assembly were shared. The workshop was part of an ongoing series that covered discussions about governance.

Since 2012, UOSSM has been providing emergency medical relief and healthcare services to the Syrian people affected by the crisis, working primarily inside Syria and with Syrian refugees in Turkey.
UOSSM:
In 2017, UOSSM supported 18 primary health care centers and 13 mobile clinics
UOSSM Bab Al Hawa Hospital provided health care services to 250,000 patients in 2017
In 2017, 175,000 beneficiaries were provided with nutrition services focused on women and children
UOSSM Mental Health and Psychosocial Support provided care to 22,955 beneficiaries in 2017
UOSSM Protection services were provided to 75,564 in 2017
