The hospital provided Obstetrics/Gynecological services along with pediatric care, general surgeries, and orthopedic care to approximately 5000 patients a month. In addition, an average of 150-175 major surgeries are performed there per month.
In the past week, four other medical facilities were targeted directly, and indirectly, causing death and destruction.
On January 29, a nurse in Tafs, Daraa, was killed during an attack while she was on duty. The attack occurred at a nearby market where several other civilians were reportedly killed as well. On February 1, an SARC center in Idlib was attacked by an airstrike, resulting in severe structural damage to the facility, putting it out of service. On February 2, a primary health care center in Qaboun, Damascus, was attacked, killing three volunteers, causing damage to the facility, and putting it out of service. On February 3, an ambulance in Duma, rural Damascus, was attacked killing the driver, and wounding one paramedic; the ambulance was partially damaged.Dr. Khaula Sawah, CEO of UOSSM USA said, “We have repeatedly condemned attacks on medical staff and medical facilities. These attacks are war crimes and are in direct violation of international laws. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions. We call on the international community to put an immediate end to these attacks by enforcing these laws.”
